Update about time/Storyboard work

Hey guys and gals been a while since i posted up anything at all being a number of reasons. Mainly content just never was sure about the quality of my stuff or what to put up on here I am a perfectionist when it comes to art and cartoons you see.

I would in future like to make this blog much more sophisticated in its posts on work rather than random sketching and fan crazes cause you might as well go to my DA account for that.

A lot has happened in the past few months some good ,others that will not be breathed a word about and others that sadly slip my mind. But one major thing that has had a positive effect on my uni practice and skills is storyboard art.

Just before summer i got in touch with an animation director named Steven Spencer founder of Nice Monster (used to be based in the Custard factory Birmingham now in London) who are best known for their CGI animated short BEST centered on the downfall of George Best and his family.

Steve originally bought me on board for a project that currently is still in production that i cannot mention for confidential reasons.

And from there he gave me similar storyboarding jobs for his other film ideas and projects even doing a storyboard for a music video.

I am happy to say with his permission I am able to show you some of my latest storyboard work.

It’s for the charity First Light and it’s a set of 10 films involving three characters a male director, cameraman and female producer. Each shorts premise is on the subject of film making essentials and rules. The shorts are going to be both educational and cartoony slapstick.

With Steve guidance and draft scripts I tried to compel storyboards that showed that comedic value and expression the cameraman i found was the best to draw because of his personality which you should be able to guess from the panels below.

This storyboard i experimented to broaden the exaggerated expressions
On the characters to give nice monster some challenges but
To keep that comedy in them.

What makes me not want to play my Xbox 360 all time

People have always constantly asked me since I was 10 were do I get inspiration from for my practice. My answer would commonly be cartoons and animated films because all my life they have played a role in my personal development.
But in reality I can explore a diverse range of media and creative concepts.

Recently in the last four years I have asked myself the same old question that I think all practitioners ask themselves sometime in their life. “What inspires me?” “What makes me tick?” “What makes me not want to jump off a building?”.

I aim in this post to prove too you just through photos and small annotations what things have influence my style work and subject matter in big ways.

This is my inspirational wall that I started it just near the end of last year and it was really just a Consciousness decision after I had printed out a favorite image of one of the shows I adored The updated Mr. Men show US version.
And it just grew over the next few months (went through a lot of printer ink as you could imagine).

Majority of stuff on this wall that I present is nostalgic loves and memoires or influences that effect my art or creative thinking in general. I do apologize if the photos quality is bad but I was using a Kodak family camera and its very sensitive to movement.

First I must start with the limitless nostalgic love for animation I have I cannot do any to save my life before you ask. But I have always had a great fascination and love for the different universes and stories it is able to bring to life just from a bunch of words on a paper. Animation has the power to change the image of our world both positive and negative. I can say with out a doubt this happens to me with almost every single show, series, movie or short I have witnessed.

The cult classic anime of Katsuhiro Otmos manga AKIRA was just one of those rare gems that you could find in a cave among other diamonds. So eye catching and powerful it just impacted my imagine on so many levels Matured my world and stories. And gave me a much better attitude for anime in general. The character of Tetsuo I could really relate to plus he was just a bad ass with his red cape and freakily mutation acts.

With out any hesitation or auguring I will admit that I am a sucker for young kids cartoons. Even if they have the most clichéd stereotypes and basic moral stories. shows like My Little pony Friendship is magic, make way for Noddy, The Mr. Men, show,Roile Poile Olie even Babar are to me just as awesome and decent as any well known iconic movie or live action TV series.

Lets not forget the great masters and illustrators of the past present and future. So many creative minds that challenge and amuse us. I have only selected my top favourites out of a whole library of passionate individual practitioners and artists to have a space on the wall.

I learned Never be arrogant of histories creativity because you will be amazed and stumped by what you discover and gain from analyzing masters and artists like Goya.

I really did not do justice to Todd Schorr or his work with this photo or piece the mans an acyclic genius and his composition and use of propaganda and history plays a hug part in my illustration nowadays.

Its odd and ironic when you think about how 96% of the stuff I produce is character design based and yet the wall only showcases two or three out of a list of hundreds of unique recognisable animators and character designers. I am surprised with the amount of content and support character design receives on the Internet and in the media after looking in great depth at the subject. Because this is a key element in practically anything we create.

Ben Balistreri, Katie Rice and  Miah Alcorn are among the well known professionals that have pride in the collage yet the two men who started my enthusiasm for characters Tom Bancroft and Stephen Silver are not part of the wall what the heck!

In the last two months I have taken part or volunteered for different creative events and festivals from around Birmingham UK. In doing so I have exposed my self to design and graphic that somehow connects to my work or give me ideas even if the stuff I find is just promotional leaflets and products.

The foundation for this wall montage is set now it will begin to layer over and over again generating new substances to

Whatever I find whether its completely related to me my work or interests or its just eye candy it goes on this wall from now on I plan to have it covered by the end of year.
So we should have a collage of Jowy’s different and bizarre motivation and fandom essentially.

I hope people found this post insightful or just intriguing. I will try to keep my blogs to this level of detail and information from now on

See you later with my next blog post  ;)

its all Slime not Mucus

Its been a couple of weeks since i last posted anything. reason why (if any one cares).
I have been real lazy with my status on all my online accounts  like DA Face book its a bad habit (Face book i hardy use BTW).
I also place the blame on to many stupid dang detractions with no  , see Jowy is the type of guy that once he watches or viewers something he finds fascinating or eye-catching he will get hooked on it. Either ranting or endorsing in it for countless hours. I can waste about 4 hours looking at pieces i did last week or even in the same day over and over again its kind of sad.

But i generally have been organizing my time better and focused on improving time management and the social life issue. I have a lot more possible opportunities and commissions to look forward too this year i pray they come into being and I become more motivated.

Anyway i remember really liking the fluid designs of all the main cast and how stylized there body shapes were so having seen it again i did my own alternative quick designs inspired by the films characters used the colours and designs of their clothes to make it more accuarte  for whose who.

BTW the reason the shadow man wannabe looks like a twisted extra for the Gypsy in hunch back of Notre dame. because he surprisingly was one of my favorite characters. I think it was the voice and overall skinny design of him. I gave him a sinister jolly jokey aspect too his design if you understand what I mean.

Well the start of the new year i watched the DVD of Disney’s Princess and the fog a second time and for some odd reason i gained a lot more visual inspiration from the second watch its a decent film good characters the pacing seems a bit too fast (but maybe that’s the second watch talk
ing)

As much as i would like to admit and shout out I am a Disney Freak and have a heavy dose their style within my own work, I have to disagree. Because In my spare time I have been discovering a devise spectrum of great independent studios and films not forgetting comic artists and character designers Katsuhiro Otomo I am looking at you ^^. This exploring phase challenged my honest opinion on what i thought made Disney magical in the first place and Enchatened just never did it for me even with the animated segments.
(Constricting myself here) after seeing Princess and the Frog it bought all the nostalgic love and memories of my apparition for the talented production staff the animators, character designers, and background designers they all made these stories come to life in some way shape or from you can not deny that. I have a real admiration for the awesome Tom Bancroft. He was the artist that got me exposed to the term character design in the first place so thanks Tom. ;)

Obviously the backdrops in the movie were inspirational

I created the Bayou city concept not only from the film but after listening to a couple of instrumental scores that sound like southern country music and thought about what the climates would be like if a fully civilized city was built and spread out across the jungle and swamp environment’s that’s where I made these development drawings depicting different angles of the suburbs downtown and even stadium areas did this to find a realistic and present day look to how our urban neighborhood are structured and fitted together.
drawing the urban landscapes has been a joy of mime since I was 9.
I concentrate more on figures and the human body nowadays.

The other submissions are from last year and this month mostly a mixture of observation out in my town and skecthdumps the usaul package your garneted at least a sketchdump on this blog lol.

Until next blog hopefully more regular then it’s been

is it a cute win or fail
