Jowy Shenanigans 18/7/12

All right we are back here again after a couple days away from posting anything I will be brunt with you all I have had a lazy mind in the recent weeks after leaving university. Found it hard to stay away from creative mode on Minecraft, fan art and YouTube channels fall under this category as well. I need to keep my mind and imagination active during this slow period until I find a suitable job linked some how to my practice. This is not rocket science I can do it but I have personally found out that I need to be really invested in my own ideas and characters to truly make them shine and sparkle. That’s why there’s not a lot of JOWY stuff on my DA account at the moment , which is quite sad honestly. But I call this a phase I am going though like in the early days when I started out on online.

I sent off my CV to a local animation company this week they already responded back. They would keep in touch with me as they like my work, which is showing promise. Soapbox/rant aside lets get to the core of this post.

Another anonymous person (don’t want it mention names) came forward three days ago with a commission for a married couple Tony and Carla who are youth preachers in a church but they are moving on. The client wanted a portrait as token of thanks to them. They wanted it done digitally like I have done with all my recent illustration work and preaching was the most important element that needed be illustrated in it.

1st day

I had to gather photo references from their facebooks to make it as close to the couple as possible obviously duh no caricatures here.

OH BOYYYYY i could already tell i was going to fun with this commission before i started

2nd day

I still enjoy doing the value tonal thing its educating me a lot more on how light works in different directions. And how dark shadows can be depending on the light scoure, space and time.

I actually created a light source that would be coming from the back of the figures to give the illusion of a projector

Carla was surprisingly easy to capture tony gave me a few problems mostly because of the angle of his head and his mouth

The picture also had to show some of the youth of the church but as silhouettes.

Day 3

Showed it to my mom, as she knew these people gave me a citric about his hands and mellow expressionhe did look rather relaxed lol.

My my we need to make you simile again

"Will this trim suit you fine sir"

One last visual was added and that was the name of a youth Christian camp/event called Ignite that the couple went to or promoted (not sure which)

Again with the overlaying of the colour and the brown suit and the blue curtains

The client unfortunately came back sooner then I expected but was very happy with the result as it was so there was no real reason to complain Tony and Carla loved it.

Sweet Another satisfied customer.

FINALE

I don’t mean to make these blog posts long I just feel like I am leaning a lot more about my digital skills and observation from doing pieces like this hopefully I start doing some paid work very soon because pieces like this give me hope for my future even on the laziest of days

Any how until next Post Laters

Jowy Shenanigans 11/7/12

My BAD I have left this blog unupdated (which is not even a word genius)
For a week or so. Lack of good content to be honest also I would even go far as to say just laziness really after those two days of solid sketching I ran out of steam and went back to less important matters.I started my long hunt for jobs at the job centre last week so everything’s a go shenanigans all leading up to the ultimate goal. Finding my appropriate start in the industry as a professional.

The good news is I have kept myself artistically busy this week with some commission work not paid. did it for a on friend on DA who wanted me to draw my interpretation on his ch aracters Pierre LeRoux and his family . I said in my DA description this “piece gave me an excuse to try out digital painting again” and that was my intention with this specific illustration a sort of Todd Schorr painted look.see DA submission.

Process

Wow seems i learned something from those Perspective books finally it helped doing the disappearing point ..........sort of

Its much more rewarding to me to start out doing tonal and value tests before I move on to colour . The Recent NHS competition I submitted to showed me how effective tone can be on its own.

I believe later on this year I will update my tablet and software as the painting and marks are not all that smooth and crisp the way I would like them they should be seamless blend together.

How did I get stuck doing this job again what did I bet on?….

Maybe a little too much light on that bowl : p

GRAND FINALE

There you have it another successful blog post

Nothing much is going on in terms of the jobs at the moment but I am trying to make an effort to continue sketching in the juxtaposing style I have i achieved in my last year university work

Jowy Shenanigans 29/6/12

This week is the final week to get the competition pieces I have been posting on about for the last two weeks ready for submission today before five. Now I got the first illustration done and added an overlay layer of colour to the tonal value because I felt for the subject matter its characters needed to look and feel vibrant despite how dark the backdrop got but I feel it brings out the characters better.

There are elements I would change in this but I think it’s at a good enough finish to submit to the competition that I hope gets my style recognized.
I had started making very good process on the second illustration in terms of tone but liked I ranted about on facebook a couple of days ago I lost all that PS work and only ended up with a small recording from screenflow to archive what could have been a strong piece. But considering time I doubt I will even get it up to the standard I had imagined it to be. Still I will send if off as a line art drawing if worst comes to worst

anyway until next post LATERS ;)

Change is indeed good

Now I usually would restrict myself from putting up some of my early or just rough work because I have a perfectionist mind set when it comes to character design or cartoons. If the design looks out of proportion or just ugly depending on the subject I leave it alone for more than a while. Which is exactly what I did with this tablet doodle I started back in 2010 but it never was as cute as I wanted and the deer just irritated me every time I tried to redo him partly cause I was too lazy to look up anatomy and movement of the creatures back then.

I am a real sucker for this type of character design that’s partly reason why I am a Brony (le sigh).
I don’t hate most of these early designs as I should they have some nice quirky merit to them

Now today after finishing my illustration Crouse in university and altering my style and media the doodle is much more closer to how I imagined it to look like.  Its not perfect but I think it archived what I set out to do two years ago (Cute and innocent).

I am a real sucker for that type of design that’s partly why I am a Brony (le sigh).

Its crony but true when I say practice makes prefect and you will never get exactly what you envision if you do not put that extra work in which is something I have leaned throughout my years the hard way sometimes still do. ^^;
